You Go, Grill: The Best Deals for National Burger Day

There’s no shortage of great burgers in Houston, but to celebrate National Burger Day on May 28, CityBook selected a handful of our faves.

The Burger Joint

The Heights location of this Montrose patio star opened just a few weeks before the shutdown, and either restaurant provides a great open-air spot to enjoy a meal tomorrow. It’s hard to go wrong with a classic cheeseburger, but the Kimchi version is a standout. Wash it down with a salted-caramel milkshake — or, our pick, the alcohol-infused mint-chip shake!

Eugene’s

The burger here is delightfully straightforward, a surprise hit at this Montrose gem proffering Gulf Coast cuisine. Snag the sandwich and one side — a heaping portion of vinegary cole slaw is recommended, or perhaps the red beans and rice with sausage for an ultra-carnivore — for just $11.95 all weekend long. Dine-in or takeout available.

Frank’s Americana Revival

Enjoy a piled-high burger made with Texas Akaushi beef and hand-cut fries, plus a draught beer, for just $20 tomorrow at this River Oaks restaurant. Frank’s also offers a mouthwatering menu of take-and-bake options, so it’s easy to stock up and stay home the rest of the weekend!

Hopdoddy Burger Bar

For 10 years, giving back to the community has been a part of this Austin-based burger chain’s DNA. And in 2020, that means paying it forward to frontline workers during the pandemic. Customers are able to purchase burgers for healthcare professionals with the code “Buy1Give1” applied to online orders. Feeling a tad adventurous? Try the tuna burger, which was permanently added to the Hopdoddy menu today!

Squable

Newly reopened and reservations-only, Justin Yu and Bobby Heugel’s Heights café dishes a mean French cheeseburger, with a stout beef patty, raclette, butter and pickles — served with fries and half-off at the bar after 9pm!

State Fare

Known for comfort food that always hits the spot, State Fare has a tasty Hicksburger on the menu for $18. It’s piled with pastrami, gruyere, sautéed onion, chicken-fried fries and a signature house sauce, and served with fries (or a salad, but something tells us this meal isn’t for calorie-counters). The Memorial-area restaurant also continues its to-go family packs, like the one with two regular burgers and two kids meals, plus the dill-pickle dip or queso, for just $55.

Relish

The charming Upper Kirby restaurant is offering $5 off its caramelized-onion-and-aioli-topped burger with fries — and happy-hour pricing on beer and wine from 11am-5:30pm. Dinner reservations recommended, but curbside carryout is available, too!

Leadership in Action: CEO Theresa Roemer Credits Mother, Mentors and Mindset for Accomplishments

How did you get to where you are today? My journey to where I am today is built on a foundation of hard work, dedication, and perseverance. Every step along the way, I faced obstacles, but I approached each one with determination and a “never give up” mindset. Instead of being discouraged by challenges, I used them as opportunities to grow and improve. Consistency was key—I committed to showing up and giving my best effort every day. I also learned not to take “no” as a final answer. Instead, I saw it as a chance to push harder, adapt, and find another way forward. It’s this combination of persistence, resilience, and unwavering focus that has brought me to where I am today.
