A new decade dawned on Jan. 1 — but this weekend brings the Lunar New Year and establishes 2020 as the Year of the Rat, which is certainly worth celebrating. Foodie-fab events and art-filled festivals alight around the city over the next few days.


For arguably the most delicious way to celebrate, visit the newly expanded Phat Eatery in Katy, where an eight-course feast prepared by chef-owner Alex Au-Yeung is very hotly anticipated. There are four sold-out seatings throughout the weekend — but a waitlist is live, so hop on if you want to get a taste of the Yu Sheng “Prosperity Toss” —raw salmon, pickled carrot and plum sauce — or the Grandma Char Siu, which is charcoal-grilled Berkshire pork with Texas honey.

Alternatively, raise a glass at Rosalie, on the ground floor of Downtown’s C. Baldwin. Beverage director Jay Pyle created a beautiful cocktail of matcha green tea syrup, lemon juice, gin and seltzer; the color green signifies wealth and money for the new year.

Cultural institutions like the MFAH host family-friendly festivals with arts-and-crafts, fun performances and delicious bites all day long on Saturday. And in EaDo, HTX Market and 8thWonder Brewery team up for an all-day party, complete with food trucks and an art market.

Fall Philanthropy Report: Children’s Assessment Center Touts ‘Healing’ for Child Abuse Victims

What is your mission? The Children’s Assessment Center (The CAC) provides healing services to over 6,300 child sexual abuse victims and their families each year. We offer forensic interviewing, family advocacy, mental health services, medical care, and court services at no cost. We facilitate community outreach and prevention training to raise awareness about child abuse in our community and how to keep children safe. Last year, we provided prevention training to over 35,000 community members, including 23,500 children in schools.
