Montrose Tex-Mex Fave Fires Up Al Fresco Brunch

IT'S AL FRESCO brunch season in Houston, and Candente has rolled out a new menu for the occasion. Boasting a large buzzy patio — with lots of fans! — the Montrose Tex-Mex charmer is known for its live-fire cooking technique that gives food a signature Mesquite-grilled flavor.

The new brunch menu offers twists to some of Candente’s most popular dishes. The enchiladas con huevos are familiar cheesy goodness — but topped with two over-easy eggs. But the real showstopper is the breakfast burrito: It’s stuffed with meat, beans, cheese and covered in queso (because why not?) And no Tex-Mex brunch menu would be complete without chilaquiles or tamales! The tamales are topped with chili and fried eggs for good measure.

Pair the mouthwatering meal with one of the new brunch cocktails like the jalapeno-laced Bloody Mary, or one of Candente’s new margaritas of the month. April’s flavor is the patio-friendly spicy watermelon marg made with watermelon liquor and jalapeno.

Brunch is served Saturdays and Sundays from 10am-2pm.

Alex Au-Yeung (photo by Jenn Duncan)

WHEN IT OPENED a few months ago, The Woodlands outpost of acclaimed Katy restaurant Phat Eatery was billed as Alex Au-Yeung's dream restaurant. Unfortunately, Au-Yeung never got to see it come to fruition, as he passed away earlier this year. But the James Beared-nominated chef-owner certainly left his mark — and in honor of what would be his 53rd birthday, operating partners Kevin Lee and Marvin He have organized two pop-up tribute dinners.
