Luxe RV Resort Opens Near NRG Just in Time for Rodeo Season

NOW OPEN IN Southwest Houston off Almeda Road is Jetstream RV Resort, a 165-space Class A recreational vehicle community.

The property spans 15 acres and includes amenities like a heated swimming pool, expansive clubhouse and lounge, outdoor kitchen and beer garden. For families, there’s an arcade room, playground, dog wash and shuffleboard courts, plus on-site laundry.

The location is between Downtown and the Med Center, and offers easy access to 288, the Beltway and 610. Just a few miles from NRG Park, Jetstream promises to be a popular option for those coming into town for the Rodeo, which just announced its 2023 musician lineup. (Highlights include mainstays like Chris Stapleton, Jason Aldean, Zac Brown Band, Cody Johnson, Brad Pailsey and Luke Bryan, plus Houston fave Bun B and old-school group New Kids on the Block.)

“Jetstream at The Med Center will provide an attractive alternative to hotel living for those who plan to spend a significant amount of time in Houston, whether as employees in the downtown area, as sightseers or both,” said Julie Davis, a VP of CityStreet Residential, which developed Jetstream, in a release. “It’s an inviting place they can go home to and enjoy in the evenings and on weekends, where their families can join them, and they can get to know their neighbors. We’re excited about the debut of this property and the successes of our other RV resorts.” CSRP operates Jetstream communities in Wharton, Waller, Pearland and Brownsville.

Alonso, inset, and her acrylic-on-canvas painting 'Birds'

BASED IN HOUSTON, Cuban-American painter Erika Alonso is a self-taught, self-described “painterly painter,” with a playful and very idiosyncratic take on abstract expressionism, mark making, and automatism, where the artist works quickly and intuitively, relying upon the subconscious to guide the artistic process. Her work can be found in numerous private collections across the United States and Europe, including that of beloved Houston collector and art fanatic Lester Marks. On Friday, Sept 8., from 7-9pm at Lanecia Rouse Tinsley Gallery, Alise Art Group's Art House presents Alonso’s solo exhibition Birds Are People Too (And Other Thoughts . . . ).

Nik Parr and The Selfless Lovers

THE WORD “FUNK” has been around a long, long time. In the mid-1950s, New Orleans drummer Earl Palmer popularized the word as a musical term when he instructed musicians on recording dates to “play a little funkier.” In his book Flash of the Spirit: African and Afro-American Art and Philosophy, historian Robert Farris Thompson goes back even further, and traces the origin of the word “funky” to the Ki-Kongo word lu-fuki, meaning “positive sweat,” an olfactory term used to praise an individual for the integrity of their art.
