Two restaurant newbies celebrated summer openings, beginning with Bosscat Kitchen & Libation’s bars inside The James and The Ivy apartment buildings in River Oaks. Residents and guests can enjoy signature cocktails from Bosscat’s bar director Matt Sharp, plus an exclusive menu of light bites. More foodie fun awaited at Poitín, Sawyer Yards’ newest arrival. The restaurant’s grand-opening bash benefited the Orange Show Center for Visionary Art, and was full of funky touches like undercover comedians from The Secret Group and a drag show by Blackberri and friends. There was no shortage of beverages or bites — the pork belly apps were nicely washed down with colorful cocktails and beer from neighboring Holler Brewery and Green Flash Brewing Co.

How did you get to where you are today? My journey began with a need to be financially independent and an even a deeper drive to create a lasting legacy. The centuries-old Hammam tradition has always fascinated me—not just for its relaxation benefits, but for its holistic approach to cleansing the body, mind, and soul. So, combining my passion with a vision to bring an authentic yet luxurious Hammam spa experience to Houston, I took the leap less than two years ago to open my own spa.
The road has been challenging but incredibly rewarding. I’ve always believed that success comes from dedication and staying true to your values, and that has been my guiding principle. I focused on creating a serene, authentic atmosphere where every guest feels truly cared for. From hand-picking the best products to carefully curating our services, I wanted every detail to reflect the quality and soul of the OMB Hammam rituals.
I also knew that building relationships would be key. Word-of-mouth, strong community connections, and media support have been instrumental in my growth. I was fortunate to be featured on TV and in several magazines, which brought more visibility to the spa. But at the heart of it, the success comes firstly from God, and then from the positive feedback and loyalty of our clients, who have embraced this experience and helped spread the word.
Today, I’m proud to see how far we’ve come, but I know this is just the beginning.
Who do you credit? First and foremost, I credit God for my success and for giving me the strength and ability to start this business. Without His constant help and mercy, none of this would have been possible.
Next, I credit myself for the determination and perseverance it took to bring this vision to life. I’ve always been someone who, once committed to a goal, pursues every possible avenue to achieve it. Building this business required dedication, resilience, and an unwavering belief in myself.
What lessons have you learned that might enlighten and inspire others? Trust your instincts, stay focused, and remain positive. Positive energy is magnetic—you’ll attract people with the same outlook. Don’t let difficulties or obstacles slow you down; they are a part of the journey. And no matter how busy or demanding life gets, always make time for yourself and your family. Balance is essential for both personal well-being and long-term success.
What’s new in your life or work that you’re excited about? I had initially planned for this to be a surprise, but I think now is the perfect time to share some exciting news: God-willing, we’re expanding! It’s something I had envisioned, but I honestly didn’t expect it to happen so soon. Thank God, we’ve had investors reaching out from many different areas, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to grow the business and bring the Hammam experience to more people. This new venture is a thrilling next step, and I’m eager to see where it takes us.
Always Farm Fresh and Fabulous, Recipe for Success’ ‘Delicious Alchemy’ Delights Foodie Guests
AL FRESCO DINNERS with food prepared by buzzy chefs may be trendy these days, but Gracie Cavnar’s Recipe for Success was way ahead of the curve, with her annual Delicious Alchemy banquet coming ’round for the 19th time this fall.
The event, held this year at the nonprofit’s Hope Farms near Downtown, featured for the first time an all-female roster of 10 chefs each producing a different course for the fabulous outdoor festivities. Many dishes featured produce from the farm, which aims to provide healthy food in a “food desert” and provide educational opportunities for kids.
Even the décor came from the land. “Shimmering white blooms plucked from fields of the co-located Flower Child micro flower farm seemed to levitate from a stunning black tabletop design,” noted a rep for Recipe, “making a spectacular display against the pastoral vibe of the barn.”
The menu included Tony’s Chef Kate McLean duck cones with scallion pudding, Savor+Sweat Chef Erin O’Leary Stewart’s black trumpet mushroom crisps with herbed cashew cheese, Culinaire Chef Barbara McKnight’s chilled cucumber-scallion borscht with dill bubble bread, and Cochinito & Co Chef Victoria Elizondo’a passion fruit ceviche with Habanada peppers.
Later courses included Chef Suu Khin’s turnip coconut cream soup with turmeric, Jane Wild Studio Chef Jane Wild’s handmade gnocchi with pepper sauce and mascarpone, Street to Kitchen Chef Benchawan Painter’s crispy chicken with coconut
kombucha squash and pumpkin curry sauce, and Camellia Monday Hospitality Chef Jessica Timmons’ braised Iberico pork cheek with sauce piquant, collard pecan Grits, and vinegared okra. For dessert: Recipe for Success Foundation Culinary Director Alyssa Dole’s olive oil cake with whipped beet mascarpone and carrot cake pompote — and The Bake Happening Chef Andrea De Gortari’s chocolate beet cookies and spiced sweet potato cookies, which were served to go.
Each course touted expert wine or spirits pairings for a thoroughly elevated dining experience. VIPs spotted among the 50 guests at the intimate, breezy affair included Bob Cavnar, Ford Hubbard, Renea Abbott, Sherree and Norman Frede, Aashish and Erin Parekh, Jessica Rossman, and Karen and Murry Penner.
Recipe for Success Foundation is “dedicated to combating childhood obesity by transforming how children and families understand and engage with food,” per its mission statement. “Through its pioneering programs, the foundation has empowered over 50,000 youth to make lifelong healthy eating decisions.”

Vinophiles Pour It On for Periwinkle Foundation, Crown New 'Iron Sommelier'
A WINE-TASTING rendezvous at the Post Oak Hotel benefited a heartwarming charity — to the tune of $410,000!
At the Periwinkle Foundation's Iron Sommelier competition, more than 600 well-heeled Houstonians gathered to enjoy curated wines and an evening program promoting Periwinkle's camps, arts and survivor programs that support pediatric cancer patients and their families. Fourteen of the city's top sommeliers vied for the title of Iron Sommelier, handpicking wines according to a region, grape or style. The judges, including Paul Hobbs of Paul Hobbs Wineries, a.k.a. the Steve Jobs of Wine, evaluated based on selection, presentation, originality and expertise.
In the end, Guard & Grace's Matthew McLaughlin was crowned the 2024 Iron Sommelier Champion; his clever chosen theme was “Rhône If You Want To: Rhône Around the World.”
An exciting auction touted unique items like a wine-centric vacation in Gigondas, France; a personalized wine cellar with 40-plus curated bottles; and several other to-dine-for restaurant experiences.
