At Dress for Success and Women of Wardrobe's annual Summer Soiree, generously hosted by Tootises, fashion-forward attendees dressed in pretty pastels, bold patterns and lots of ruffles — many designed by Houston's Hunter Bell, who showed off her fall line alongside jewelry by Claudia Lobao. Chairs Karishma Asrani, Courtney Campo, Allie Danziger and Melissa Sugulas welcomed guests to the event, which toasted the 20th anniversary of Dress for Success, and raised more than $20,000 for the org.
Ring in the New Year Early with Paella, Sangria and Live Music at this Must-See Concert in West Houston
Dec. 27, 2023
RING IN THE new year a bit early at Queensbury Theatre near CityCentre. On Dec 30, the Energy Corridor of Houston Orchestra (ECHO) presents Dance the Night Away — an exciting evening of Spanish and Spanish-tinged music, including works by Isaac Albéniz and Cuban composer Ernesto Lecuona y Casado; selections from West Side Story by Leonard Bernstein (Have you seen Maestro yet?); dances from Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker; and a special performance on the second half of the program by Houston-based, internationally recognized flamenco dancer, Mercy Renteria.
It’s another example of ECHO’s innovative, audience-friendly approach to programming, and commitment to bringing affordable, professional-level performances of classical and contemporary music to the Energy Corridor.
Renteria, a striking and dramatic dancer who began flamenco lessons as a teenager, founded Undebel Flamenco in 2016. Through intimate performances produced in collaboration with businesses and non-profits around the city, her company aims to promote the art of flamenco and educate and empower the Houston community. In 2021, Undebel Flamenco was chosen to open the PIANO Y VOZ tour from the acclaimed Flamenco singer and Grammy winner Diego el Cigala and in February 2022, Renteria was also chosen by the Society of Performing Arts in Houston to open the gala night for mandolin virtuoso Chris Thile at the Wortham Theater Center’s Cullen Theater.
ECHO
Co-founded in 2014 by its music director and conductor Michael Fahey, ECHO continues to be a model for a successful community orchestra, with members that include both professional and volunteer players who motivate and support each other’s musical artistry.
Tickets for Dance the Night Away include wine, sangria, Spanish tapas and paella (a saffron-flavored dish containing rice, meat, seafood, and vegetables), Spanish tapas, and of course, a champagne toast.

IT'S ONE OF the most iconic restaurant buildings in town, having once been the home to Mark's American Cuisine and, most recently, Chris Shepherd's groundbreaking rotating concept One Fifth, which closed in January 2022. Now, we know what's next for the cathedral at the corner of Westheimer and Dunlavy.
A new upscale Japanese restaurant from Gitano Capital, the group that brought Ojo de Agua to River Oaks District earlier this year, is slated to open in the century-old building in 2025.
"We could not be more honored to have the opportunity to build upon the storied legacy of the numerous quintessential Houston establishments to occupy 1658 Westheimer over the past several decades,” said Patricio Quiroz, co-founder of Gitano Capital, in a statement. “The building itself is an innate part of the fabric of the broader Montrose neighborhood that surrounds it, and we feel that Montrose — one of the city’s most eclectic and vibrant nexuses — is the ideal setting for us to unveil an original culinary offering to the City of Houston.”
The Gitano team promises a "world-class roster of chefs and mixologists" will create innovative Asian fare; details to follow in the coming months. Meanwhile, its Ojo de Agua remains a popular destination for boho-chic, health-minded Mexican fare and fresh-squeezed juices.
