From Paul Wall to Putt-Putt, Here's What's Happening at Discovery Green This Spring

ONCE THE FREEZE passes and a beautiful spring sets in, head out to soak up the sun and enjoy family time at Discovery Green, which just announced its new seasonal programming.

The Pixar Putt pop-up runs through March 20, with 18 interactive holes inspired by Disney and Pixar films like Toy Story, Monsters, Inc. and Coco, among others. Navigate obstacles to score a hole-in-one on Buzz Lightyear, and pose for pics with a tiny replica of the house from Up! For Valentine’s Day, the mini-golf experience has coupled up with The Grove restaurant: Those who have tickets for Pixar Putt on Feb. 11 or 12 gain access to a rooftop reception from 5-10pm, with a free dessert spread, fabulous views and a cash bar. (They can also receive 20 percent off their dinner bill downstairs.)

Outdoor fitness classes resume March 1, with offerings ranging from core yoga and pilates to HIIT. And the outdoor roller rink opens March 4; an opening-night party features music by DJ Mohawk Steve, and the first 50 in line can skate for free.

University of Houston Downtown debuts a new concert series on Thursday nights in April, with guests like Ren Patrick, Oliver Penn and Las Fenix. Paul Wall closes out the lineup on May 19!

Family movie nights take place on March 18, April 2, May 7 and June 11, featuring flicks like Encanto and the throwback A League of Their Own. And on Saturdays this spring, bring pre-sorted recyclables and compost materials for the City of Houston and Happy Earth Compost to pick up.

Other special one-offs: Bring the kiddos to Texan Toddler Tuesday, sponsored by the Rodeo and featuring storytime, a roping demonstration and a photo op with a rodeo clown. And grab a sneak peek of the Art Car lineup on April 7.

AS WE GET into the holiday season, we’re reminded of what we have, what we want and what might be lacking. As Sheryl Crow says in her song, Soak up the Sun, “It’s not having what you want, it’s wanting what you've got.” We caught up with LeBrina Jackson, owner of Escape Spa in Cypress, Texas, and learned how she tackles the holiday season with hope, love and most importantly, gratitude.

Its concepts include Doris Metropolitan, Hamsa and Badolina Bakery, all of which deliver the rich flavors of Israeli cuisine in complex, photogenic and delicious dishes. Its newest, Októ, opened earlier this year, one of several energetic restaurants to bow in the Montrose Collective, just in time for the holidays.
