While working as an exec at Saks Fifth Avenue, homeowner Schaefer channeled a previous gig as a surfboard designer in Australia, dividing the Saks logo into 64 pieces and using them graphically on surfboards sold at the department stores. One of the boards adds a sculptural accent in the media room.

This was no simple remodel, and, with its starkly contemporary exterior shape, newly paneled with horizontal driftwood-gray cedar planks, it was not looking like any other home in the subdivision. It was a lotus blooming in the desert.
