Thousands move here each year for jobs in oil and gas, medicine and finance — but what about to grow their impact as influencers? Body builder Maxx Chewning, originally from Richmond, Va., connected with fellow fitness guru and YouTube star Christian Guzman, who convinced him to relocate to Guzman’s hometown of Houston in January. “Christian is one of my best friends, and he’s one of the most influential people in the fitness world today. Period.” Guzman convinced him that H-Town presented an opportunity for Chewning to expand his online presence and grow his successful athletic clothing brand, Ever Forward.

The Upper East Side. Beverly Hills. Chicago’s Gold Coast. Here in Houston, there’s River Oaks. These neighborhoods conjure images of wealth and prestige upon mention. The name Stablewood — which is every bit an equal of the others in terms of the prominence of its residents and the stateliness of its environs — may not garner such immediate recognition. But if it weren’t such a well-kept secret, intentionally off the radar and quiet behind guarded gates, the Uptown-adjacent Memorial-area neighborhood celebrating its 25th anniversary this year certainly would.

Houston-born singer-songwriter Hayes Carll, 43, first got into the live-music scene performing in local honky-tonks and Bolivar Peninsula shrimp shacks. Inspired by the Lone Star State’s long lineage of folk- and country-music storytellers — particularly Willie Nelson — the bearded, shaggy-haired musician dropped his first album, Flowers & Liquor, in 2002. Since, he’s risen through the ranks, topped charts and received a few Grammy nominations. He recently released his sixth studio album, What It Is, and started his world tour with performances right here in Houston.
