A Sparkling Night: Ballet Ball Returns to Wortham with ‘Jewels’ Theme, Collects $1.4 Million

ALWAYS ONE OF the highlights of the spring social season, the Ballet Ball returned to its home — the Grand Foyer of Downtown’s Wortham Center — for the first time since Covid forced the event virtual. And since, in a couple of the years before the pandemic, the gala was held in a tent outside due to damage the Wortham sustained from Hurricane Harvey, the soaring space decorated by Richard Flowers to match the sparkling “Jewels” them was truly a sight to behold for the more than 400 black-tied guests.

On the Caribbean’s Dutch Island of Curaçao, the Emerging Art Scene Is as Colorful as the Scenery

Francis Sling, artist and poet, is a popular personality in Curaçao’s emerging arts scene.

THERE’S A MYSTIQUE about the Netherlands-affiliated island state of Curaçao, one of the three ABC Islands in the Caribbean just off the coast of Venezuela. (The others are Aruba and Bonaire.) Gleaming white beaches and clear turquoise waters in the shadows of towering cliffs dotted with centuries-old forts may come to mind, and historic downtowns with tall skinny candy-colored buildings. All that is, of course, a major draw. Increasingly, so is art.
